CDS Examination Overview

The Combined Defence Services (CDS) Exam, conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) twice every year, is one of the most sought-after opportunities for young graduates who dream of joining the Indian Armed Forces as officers. Through this exam, candidates can enter the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Indian Naval Academy (INA), Air Force Academy (AFA), and Officers’ Training Academy (OTA). The selection process involves a written test, followed by the SSB interview and a medical examination, ensuring that only the most capable and dedicated individuals make it to the final list.

Eligibility Criteria for CDS Examination:

To apply for CDS, candidates need to fulfill a few important conditions:

  • Nationality: Applicants must be Indian citizens.
  • Age Bracket:
    • IMA: 19–24 years
    • INA: 19–22 years
    • AFA: 19–23 years
    • OTA: 19–25 years
  • Educational Qualification:
    • For IMA & OTA – Graduation in any discipline from a recognized university.
    • For INA – A degree in Engineering.
    • For AFA – A degree with Physics and Mathematics at 10+2 level, or a Bachelor of Engineering.
  • Marital Status:
    • IMA, INA, and AFA accept only unmarried male candidates.
    • OTA accepts both unmarried male and female candidates.

CDS Syllabus:

The CDS written exam is designed to test a candidate’s command over language, awareness of current events, and numerical ability.

  • For IMA, INA & AFA:
    • English – 100 Marks
    • General Knowledge – 100 Marks
    • Elementary Mathematics – 100 Marks
  • For OTA:
    • English – 100 Marks
    • General Knowledge – 100 Marks

Those who clear the written test are invited to the SSB Interview, which focuses on personality traits, decision-making skills, and leadership qualities required in the armed forces

Important Dates & Notifications

UPSC issues a detailed calendar every year to keep aspirants updated. Generally:

  • CDS I: Notification comes out in December; exam is held around April.
  • CDS II: Notification is released in May; exam takes place around September.
  • Results: Written exam results are usually declared within 2–3 months.
  • SSB Interviews: Conducted in phases after the written results.
  • Final List: Announced after interviews and medical fitness tests.
